Britons affected by Spanish credit card fraud

Consumers in the UK are being advised to check their credit card statements for any unusual activity after reports of a major credit card scam in Spain.

Spanish police are currently investigating the suspected Spanish company at the centre of the allegations.

German credit card providers have already recalled thousands of cards that could have been compromised. Any payments processed using a Visa or Mastercard credit card when in Spain could have their personal data compromised.

It is currently thought that any consumers who had a payment processed by the Spanish company could be at risk of fraudulent activity, not just those who used their cards while abroad in Spain.

Customers from the UK will be contacted directly if the authorities think that there is a risk to them, and consumers are being reassured that any fraudulent activity will be covered under their credit card terms but that they should check their statements as a precaution.

Both Visa and Mastercard have said that they are aware of the potential breach.

A Visa Europe spokesperson said: "No details are yet confirmed, but we do not believe that the issue is specific to Visa.
As is normal in these circumstances, we have contacted a number of our member banks to make them aware of the situation and some may decide to take action as a precautionary measure.”

Mastercard said that they were currently “monitoring developments” to discover the extent to which consumers data was placed at risk. The Mastercard spokesperson stressed that Mastercard’s own data systems had not been compromised.
